Most definitions of Philosophy are contentious, due to the nature of the study having changed so dramatically in scope over the ages. Famous philosophers often quote it as being "thinking about thinking". This is a useful metaphor, as, reflective thought about specific kinds of thinking - belief policy, claims to knowledge - are part of it. However, some philosophers say that this 'thinking about thinking' does no more than to help clarify ideas and remove misunderstandings.
A more detailed definition is 'systematic rationally critical thinking' of the nature of reality (Metaphysics), the theory of knowledge and how we achieve it (Epistemology) and how one 'ought' to conduct oneself (Ethics).
Some philosophers believe that this pursuit of wisdom must evolve out of argument and debate, others that it can only ever be produced from deductive reasoning.
Western philosophy refers to ideas in the Occidental world - the two main traditions of which are Analytic and Continental - as opposed to the Oriental/Eastern tradition.
This website is an attempt to both help newcomers to Philosophy (a basic Philosophy course), and to give insights to the more schooled through my Philosophy blog, Philosophy essays and my Philosophy forum.
